Who We Are

CINEMA PACIFIC is a collaborative effort between the University of Oregon and the Eugene community. Administered by graduate students in the UO Arts and Administration Program, who work alongside undergraduate interns, CINEMA PACIFIC utilizes venues across campus and Eugene for a five-day festival of screenings, live multimedia performances, and art exhibitions.

Director RICHARD HERSKOWITZ is a nationally recognized film festival administrator and programmer. He has served as director of the Virginia Film Festival and the Cornell Cinema program, and as a trustee and president of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar. He currently serves as curator of Cinema Arts Festival Houston and is an instructor of Arts and Administration at the University of Oregon.

Mission

CINEMA PACIFIC is an annual film festival based at the University of Oregon in Eugene that is devoted to discovering and fostering the creativity of international films and new media from Pacific-bordering countries, including the U.S. Through onsite and online presentations, the festival connects stimulating artists and ideas with a diverse public, furthering our understanding of world cultures and contemporary issues.

CINEMA PACIFIC would like to give special thanks to the Oregon Humanities Center, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, UO Department of Theater, UO Libraries/Media and Instructional Services, EMU Marketing, DIVA, and Bijou Art Cinemas for helping make our inaugural year a success.

Annual International Focus

CINEMA PACIFIC at the University of Oregon features a wide selection of new film and media art from Pacific-bordering countries, including nations in America and Asia. Each year, the festival focuses in-depth on a particular national cinema. Guest artists and performers engage with audiences in post-film discussions to explore aesthetic and social issues, and developments in media production.

Adrenaline Film Project

This three-day film production workshop engages students and filmmakers from Eugene and the featured country. Under the mentorship of visiting industry professionals, participants write, shoot, and edit films that are screened on the final evening of the festival. The Kalb Award and other prizes will be awarded by a jury of film professionals.

A Festival Online and Onsite

CINEMA PACIFIC distinguishes itself from other film festivals by facilitating debate and dialogue through new media technologies. The festival will take place at venues on campus, online, and across Eugene, including the Bijou and Robinson Theaters. During the festival, audience members engage in teleconference dialogues with leading film directors and actors from the U.S. and abroad. Beyond the festival, the website serves as a 24/7 hub for online classes and discussions on Pacific national cinemas.
